Dynamic bracing

Orthotic bracing is the treatment of choice in children and young adults in their teens in Scotland if you are identified as having Pectus Carinatum at the Chest Wall Clinic.

The initial stage of the Orthotic process involves having a modular bracing system fitted to suit the size and shape of your chest.  If we are unable to get one to fit you as well as we would like, a plaster of paris cast taken of your chest; this takes around 10-15 minutes.  Both methods allow a fully customised brace to be fitted to your chest shape.  A 3D Scan of your chest will also be obtained at your first appointment.

Please bring a tight fitting t-shirt with you to your initial assessment appointment so we can fit the modular brace to you if appropriate.  If we were able to fit you with a brace on the day we will arrange a 3 month follow up appointment.

If we were unable to fit you on the day and had to take a cast, we will arrange an appointment approximately 4-6 weeks later for fitting of your Pectus Carinatum Orthosis (PCO). You must bring a tight fitting T-Shirt to this return fitting appointment.

The PCO should be worn between 16-20 hours a day, total wear time until completion will vary according to different factors and will be individual to every child or young person.

The PCO is typically manufactured in carbon fibre which is black or coloured white and can be customised with vinyl/stickers if you wish at home.

Within the Orthotic team you will be treated by Donna McHugh, Laura Andrews or Julie Dixon. There are a number of other members of staff involved in the process to make your orthosis.
